    How sizes are grouped

Each agency reports size its own way, so we put every release into three groups. Utah and New York give the average length: under 6 inches is small, 6 to 14 inches is catchable, 14 inches or more is large. Washington gives the life stage and fish per pound: fry and fingerlings are small, releases of 1 fish per pound or fewer (a pound or more each) are large, other legal-size fish are catchable. Oregon gives a category: fingerling, legal-size (catchable), trophy and broodstock (large). Minnesota gives the life stage: fry and fingerlings are small, yearlings catchable, adults large. Pennsylvania and Virginia do not report size, so their waters appear only under “Any size”. Oregon does not name the species (only “trout”), and Virginia often does not, so pick “Any trout” or “Trout, species not listed” to see them. Oregon and Pennsylvania figures are the agency schedule, not a record of fish released. Virginia and Pennsylvania give no fish counts. Only waters with their own page on this site are listed; each state page names the rest.
